Beskrivning
OSPAR’s strategic marine litter objective is to “Prevent inputs of and significantly reduce
marine litter, including microplastics, in the marine environment to reach levels that do not
cause adverse impacts to the marine and coastal environment with the ultimate aim of
eliminating inputs of litter”. The North-East Atlantic Environment Strategy (2010 – 2020)
committed OSPAR to “develop appropriate programmes and measures to reduce amounts of
litter in the marine environment and to stop litter entering the marine environment, both from
sea-based and land-based sources”
To fulfill this objective OSPAR 2014 agreed a Regional Action Plan (RAP) for Marine Litter
for the period 2014-2021.
In October 2021, OSPAR adopted a new environment strategy (NEAES 2030) which includes
strategic and operational objectives addressing marine litter. To fulfill the objectives OSPAR is
developing a new RAP-ML envisaged to be adopted in 2022. The new RAP ML includes the
following action

Action B.4.1 Prevent, locate, retrieve and handle ALDFG
This action focuses on ALDFG

as a significant source of marine litter pollution. The action
will address prevention of ALDFG at sea, its location, verification and removal, as well
handling the retrieved fishing gear in a sustainable way, building on existing experience,
linked to EU processes such as implementation of SUP-D (and related EPR-systems/collecting
targets for end-of-life gear etc.) and be consistent with other international provisions such as
the IMO regulations.
SwAM is partly responsible for this extensive action by starting the action with a gap analysis
on the application of the FAO’s voluntary guideline for marking of fishing gear in the OSPAR
area.
